Blog 4 - Meaningful Engagement

For me, meaningful international engagement should be about helping people in different countries and respecting their cultures. In conjunction with the article ‘ why you should say no to orphanage tourism (and tell all tour companies to do the same) ’, I realised the helplessness and desperation of the vulnerable groups. At the same time, I realised that the refugee community is a group that cannot be ignored, so with my research I found out about refugees in Las Vegas. Approximately 2200 refugees are welcomed annually by Las Vegas, based on Catholic organization in Southern Nevada (LOPEZ, 2016). These refugees come mainly from Cuba (71%), and more than half are women and children ( Catholic Charities - Migration Refugee Services , 2024).     As a student majoring in media & communication, I am able to share the stories of refugees through documentaries or social media. By interviewing refugees and sharing their experiences and challenges, the public is made aware ...

Blog 3 - Place Essentialism

The biggest stereotype about Las Vegas is that there is full of casinos. The flashing neon lights and rich nightlife seem to make the city never night. For a long time, Las Vegas has been marketed as a city for adults, where everyone gambles, drinks, watch adult shows and these impressions. However, as a blogger, I think this singular stereotype should be broken now.     To break the stereotypes, we firstly need to understand how stereotypes come about. As I mentioned in my first blog, because Las Vegas is a city in the middle of the desert, gambling and tourism are both for helping it grow its economy quickly and get out of hard times (Evans, 2019). Therefore, historical formation is the first challenge. Second,  travel guides and recommendations emphasize casinos and entertainment programs.  This reinforces the stereotype of Las Vegas for those who have not been there before.   Behind the gambling, the economic growt6h has given the city the opportunity...

Blog 2 - Street Art

Located at 112 S 6 th   St, Las Vegas, NV 89101, United States, Downtown Art Alley is one of the representatives of street art in Las Vegas (CM, 2023). Positioned between Carson Avenue and Fremont Street and 6 th   Street and Las Vegas Boulevard, this 10,000 square foot T-shaped alley is the newest communal space in the downtown region ( Exploring the Arts in Downtown Las Vegas | Downtowner Boutique Hotel,   2022).   This alley itself is meant to symbolise artistic freedom. Especially in Las Vegas downtown, a bustling area. Street artists can express their ideas, opinions and include a voice for the society. This freedom makes Downtown Art Alley a vibrant place to be. At the same time, street art is not only a form of art, but also addresses issues of inequality and politics. This makes Downtown Art Alley a place for art and people to reflect on important social issues.  Downtown Art Alley can be seen as an unofficial tourist attraction. Unlike the bustle...

Blog 1 - Symbols

The casino is a symbol of Las Vegas, whenever people mention Las Vegas, often the first impression is “oh there are a lot of casinos there.” I chose the casino as a symbol of Las Vegas because it represents what the city is all about: entertainment, bustle and passion. Casinos can give artificial dreams, and the dream of getting rich overnight isn’t just a phrase here, it’s a reality. The boundaries between reality and fantasy are blurred here, and it is this unique glamour that makes millions of people yearn for Las Vegas.  In the early 1900s, Las Vegas was just a small city surrounded by desert. However, the story originated with the legalization of gambling and the growth of industry in Las Vegas (Little, 2022). Since the establishment of the first casino marked the beginning of a new era for the city, casinos have become more than just places to gamble but also include industries such as food, staying and entertainment. Las Vegas offers residents and visitors a change from the ...

About Me

Image
Hi everyone!  This is Jerrica, a blogger who loves to travel. To be honest, I wasn't interested in travelling when I was a kid because at that time I didn't know how to explore the world. It wasn't until after I turned 18 that I suddenly became curious about the world. Therefore, I started my journey. Through my blog, I hope to share a few stories and insights from my journey.  The biggest thing about travelling for me is the feeling of going to a new place and experiencing how the locals live. I always find my city boring, but there are always many travellers coming to my city. It makes me realise that maybe the city I find boring is new to someone from other cities. In the same way, the city that is boring to others is fresh to me. Travelling has taught me to see the world in a different way and be peaceful to everything happens. Every time I travel, I grow and love the world more. What I look forward to most whenever I travel is the unknown of travelling. I look forw...
