Blog 3 - Place Essentialism

The biggest stereotype about Las Vegas is that there is full of casinos. The flashing neon lights and rich nightlife seem to make the city never night. For a long time, Las Vegas has been marketed as a city for adults, where everyone gambles, drinks, watch adult shows and these impressions. However, as a blogger, I think this singular stereotype should be broken now.

To break the stereotypes, we firstly need to understand how stereotypes come about. As I mentioned in my first blog, because Las Vegas is a city in the middle of the desert, gambling and tourism are both for helping it grow its economy quickly and get out of hard times (Evans, 2019). Therefore, historical formation is the first challenge. Second, travel guides and recommendations emphasize casinos and entertainment programs. This reinforces the stereotype of Las Vegas for those who have not been there before.

Behind the gambling, the economic growt6h has given the city the opportunity to be able to develop other industries such as art (street art as mentioned in my blog 2), food and natural scenery. The essentialization of Las Vegas as “gambling city” is problematic because it reduces a complex, multifaceted destination to a single, oversimplified narrative. This not only limits the perception of the city by potential visitors, but also perpetuates stereotypes that overshadow the experience of those who live there.

As a blogger, I think the fastest and best way to get to know a place is to get there and experience the city. By exploring Las Vegas, we can get a fuller picture of what the city really stands for.
